The registration deadline for the 2012 Big Gobbler Contest is Friday. The contest runs March 24-May 15. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.

Sign up at the Pass and Permit offices on Stewart and Hunter. Fees are $25 for Military ID Cardholders and $30 for civilians.

Only fresh turkeys will be scored. Scoring counts 1 x weight of turkey, plus 2 x lengths of beard, plus 10 x length of each spur.

Georgia Pre-K Lottery

Registration for the Georgia State Pre-K Lottery for the 2012-2013 school year on Fort Stewart is open and will close on April 4 at the CYSS Parent Central Services office. 

Registration forms are available at each of the day care centers. The pre-K registration forms and birth certificate must be turned in before the child's name can be placed in the lottery.

To qualify, a child must be 4 no later than Sept.1.

Registration for the lottery on Hunter will close this Friday. The Hunter lottery will be on April 3 at the Hunter Army Airfield Child Development Center.

Family Night at Stewart Lanes

Bring the family to Stewart Lanes Bowling Center for dinner and bowling at a special price from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 25. The cost is $30 for a family of five and includes 10 total games of bowling, five shoe rentals and a dinner of spaghetti, salad and a refillable drink. For more information, call 767-4273.


Crossfit training at Caro

Registration is under way for crossfit training gets under way April 2 at Caro Fitness Center.

There is no charge, but class size will be limited to 20 participants. The introductory instruction will cover functional movements, workout of the day and high intensity, boot-camp style workouts.

Classes will be from noon-1 p.m. and from 5-6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They will be taught by Randy Ray, center manager, and Jeff Smith. Both are crossfit trainers.

Group fitness classes

Sign up now for group gitness classes at Newman Fitness Center.

The variety of classes offered include kickboxing, steps, zumba, spinning, extreme, abs and water fitness. All are tailored to suit various fitness levels and needs. Child care is offered through CYSS Kids on Site.

Classes require a $3 fee, with the exception of pilates, which costs $10 per class or $45 monthly. Ask about a $25 pass for admission to 10 classes.

GC’s Golf Scramble at Taylors Creek

The Garrison Commander’s 4-Person Golf Scramble at Taylors Creek Golf Course will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. March 30. 

The cost is $35 for active duty, military retirees, Army civilians and golf club members. It is $45 for civilian guests. The registration deadline is March 28 or when the first 25 four-person teams have signed up.

Easter egg hunts

The annual Easter egg hunts and family fun days will be from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. March 31 at the School Age Services sports fields off Davis Avenue at Fort Stewart and the Squires Sports Complex fields at Hunter Army Airfield. There is no charge.

Multi-colored eggs containing assorted candy will cover the fields. Some eggs will contain coupons good for an Easter basket.

Age groups will be 0-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-10.

There will be arts and crafts, face-painting, inflatables and a chance to take and purchase photographs with the Easter Bunny. Vendors will offer funnel cakes, ice cream, drinks, hamburgers and hot dogs.

Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation is partnering with DPW Environmental Division in its second annual Earth Day Festival, which will coincide with the egg hunt.

Spring Education Forums

The Spring Education Forum for soldiers, family members and educators to discuss issues and recommendations relevant to the education of military connected students — especially in the area of special education — will be from 9 a.m.-noon on April 5 at Hunter Club.

The event also will highlight community partnerships between Hunter Army Airfield and the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.

The forum will include a presentation from the schools’ Department of Exceptional Children, followed by a question and answer session. It also will include a presentation on school programs backed by the Department of Defense for Military Students.

A similar forum, but on Fort Stewart will be from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. April 18 in the Club Stewart Ballroom.

This forum focuses on students enrolled in public and DODEA schools. 

Parents are needed to discuss issues and possible solutions in proactive, upbeat discussion groups. Those interested in being a delegate should contact the School Liaison Office at 767-6533.

Easter Brunch at Club Stewart

Easter Brunch will be served at Club Stewart from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. April 8.

The menu will include breakfast items as well as salad station, brown sugar glazed ham, citrus glazed Cornish hens, beef burgundy with pearl onions, sweet potato soufflé, fresh green bean almondine, roasted rosemary new potatoes, roasted corn with sweet peppers, peach and cheese crepes, chocolate fountain, dessert station and mimosas.

Advance tickets cost $12.95 for adults and $6.45 for children 5-10 years. At the door, the cost will be $14.95 for adults and $7.45 for children. Children younger than 4 are free.

Operation Purple Camps

Applications for Operation Purple Camps are available through the National Military Family Association NMFA website.

The goal of the program is to give military children, ages 7-17, the tools to deal with the stresses that result from a parent's deployment. Priority will be given to children whose parents are in a deployment phase between Sept. 11-Dec. 12 and who have not been to an Operation Purple Camp.

According to the website, OPC camps are “a time for having fun, making friends, and reminding military kids that they are the Nation's youngest heroes.” The camps are held during the summer.

Quarter Bowlerama

Internationally Inspired Cuisine Night at Thunder Run

Phase One of the three-phase renovation at Club Stewart is complete, and Thunder Run is back in its original space. Customers can enjoy Internationally Inspired Cuisine Night every Wednesday from 5-8 p.m.

Wild Adventures Trip

Join Leisure Travel for a trip to Wild Adventure Water and Theme Park trip in Valdosta on April 14. Registration will be accepted until April 12.

Wild Adventures has dozens of rides as well as Splash Island Water Park. Animal exhibits are located in several areas, with opportunities for animal interaction throughout the day.

Scream 'n' Shout Coming

Scream 'n' Shout “Kidz with Character,” the fastest growing elementary school assembly in the U.S., is coming to Newman Fitness Center at 6 p.m. April 19 and at 6 p.m. April 20 at Tominac Fitness Center.

The show incorporates music, movement, a little magic and lots of fun to motivate and inspire children 5-12 to become respectful, reliable, trustworthy, responsible and caring. It was described as “one of a kind.”

The cost is just $5 per family. Tickets may be purchased at the Stewart/Hunter Leisure Travel offices or at the door. At Stewart, Leisure Travel is in the PX Furniture Mall Complex and the number is 767-2841. At Hunter, Leisure Travel is in the Soldier Services Center, call 315-3674.
