MWR gearing up for summer fun

The Splashpark at Corkan Recreation Area will open Thursday at 11 a.m. for the new season. Hours will be 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday-Monday. Admission is $2 per person age 3 and up, even if you’re just watching the kids. Younger kids are free with a paying adult. Military ID required. Swimmer diapers are required for children not potty trained. For more information, call 912-767-4273.

 

Bass tournament

The third of five catch-and-release Marne Trail Bass Tournaments will be at 6:30 a.m. Saturday at Pineview Lake on Fort Stewart. Cash prizes are $250 for first-place (total weight, five-fish maximum per person) and $100 for the largest bass. Door prizes awarded after weigh-in at 11 a.m. Registration costs $25 for soldiers, retirees and their family members and youth (15 and younger), and $35 for civilians. Angler of the Year award of $400 will be awarded at a September tournament.

 

Armed Forces kids run

Every year, kids at military installations around the world run in support of Armed Forces Day. Saturday, kids at Stewart/Hunter will show their support in two free runs, one at Jordan Fitness Center on Stewart and the other starting at the corner of Steven Douglas and N. Perimeter Road on Hunter. Both start at 9 a.m. Distances vary, according to age groups 5-13. Each runner get a T-shirt. Parents are welcome to run. Junior golf clinic

PGA player John Fesperman will teach youth, ages 7-17, aspects of the game -- rules, grip, stance, posture, putting, chipping, pitching, irons and woods -- during a six-week junior golf clinic starting May 23 at Taylors Creek Golf Course. The 12 hours of instruction will be given from 9-11 a.m. through June 28. The cost is $120 per student. For more information, call 912-767-2370.

 

Movies Under the Stars

The first showing in the popular Holbrook Pond Movies Under the Stars series will be “Home” on May 28. The PF-rated film lasts 93 minutes. The movies are free and begin at sunset. Popcorn and drinks will be available for sale. Bring your own chairs or blankets. Other movies this summer are "Minions" June 24, "Cinderella" July 22, "Inside Out" Aug. 20, "Jurassic World" Sept. 17 and "Transylvania 2" Oct. 22. For more information, call 912-767-4316.

 

Jaguar tickets

Tickets for all pre-season and regular season Jacksonville Jaguars home games go on sale June 1 at the Stewart/Hunter Leisure Travel Offices. Prices range from $66-$75. The Jaguars play home games at EverBank Field in Jacksonville. The 2016 regular season opens Sept. 11 against the Green Bay Packers. The Fort Stewart Leisure Travel Office, 912-767-2841, is in the PX Furniture Mall Complex. The Hunter office, 912-315-3674, is in the Hunter PX Exchange. 

 

Dinner and a movie

Make plans to bring that special someone to "Date Night" Dinner and a Movie at Club Stewart on June 3. Watch the heartwarming, "The Hundred Foot Journey," based on the best-selling novel about an Indian family who settle in a quaint French village and open an Indian eatery. The movie is rated PG and stars Helen Mirren and Hassan Kadam. Dine on French and Indian inspired cuisine. The cost is $50 per couple. Whiskers and Bobbers

Kids, 15 and younger, of military ID cardholders are invited to the free Whiskers & Bobbers Kids Fishing Day from 7-10 a.m. June 4 at Holbrook Pond. Registration will be at the event. A limited number of T-shirts will be on sale for $10 each. Kids will be able to catch up to five catfish each, plus have their catch cleaned. Prizes will be awarded in three age groups for the largest catfish. Plus, there'll be a catfish tasting station, door prizes and area fishing clubs will have a casting competition. Permit and state fishing license fees will be waived. Parents can help their children, but not fish. A limited amount of bait and some poles will be available on a first-come basis. Summer camps

Fort Stewart's School Age Center, on Austin Road, has planned a variety of weekly summer camps, such as the "Dramafied Knockout Camp," "Mad Science Camp" and “Little Leonardios Art Camp." Field trips also are scheduled. For more information or to register, call the center at 912-767-2635.

Hunter's School Age Center, 2599 South Perimeter Road, has also set a variety of weekly summer camp activities; "All About Me," "Exploring Under The Sea," "Youth Chef Academy" and "Creating Writing," to name a few. River bubing

Registration ends June 6 for a Ichetuckneee River, Florida, tubing trip on June 11. The cost is $30 per person and includes entry fees, transportation and tube rent. Sign up on WebTrac, or at the Holbrook Equipment Rental Facility or Stewart/Hunter Leisure Travel offices. The group will depart Stewart at 5 a.m. June 11 and be back on post about 7 p.m. For more information, call 912-767-4316.
