Operation Rising Star

The first round of Operation Rising Star, the Army’s “American Idol,” starts at 7 p.m. Thursday in Thunder Run at Club Stewart.

Singers from Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield will compete to go to the Army-wide competition. The local first prize is $500, second place is $250 and third $100.

Round 2 will be on Oct. 27 and Round on Oct. 29.

Family Readiness Groups or units can compete for a Spirit Award $300 toward their unit funds regardless of whether they have a singer. Second place wins $150 and third place wins $100 toward equipment and/or pavilion rent for a function. Support will be determined by applause.

‘Hotel Transylvania’

“Hotel Transylvania” (PG) is the next outdoor movie at Holbrook Pond Recreation Area. The free show starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Dinner and bowling

CG's golf scramble

All can play in Maj. Gen. Mike Murray’s four-person scramble Oct. 31 at Taylors Creek Golf Course. It begins at 1 p.m.

The $35 per person cost includes golf cart, driving range and prizes. Players are asked to register by Oct. 30.

Circus coming

Tickets are on sale for the Cole Bros. Circus, which is coming for four performances on Fort Stewart’s Walker Field.

Shows will be at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 and 30.

Billed as the "World's Largest Circus Under the Big Top," it features traditional acts, clowns, elephants and Bengal tigers.

Tickets are available at FMWR, Stewart Bowling Center and Stewart/Hunter Leisure Travel Offices. Adult general admission is $16; for reserved seating, add $4; for VIP seating, add $7. Children 13 and younger, general admission free with a paid adult and can be upgraded.

College Probe

College Probe, from 8:30-11:15 a.m. Oct. 30, at Bradwell Institute, lets high school students, parents and soldiers to learn about post-secondary options, financial assistance and scholarships. More than 60 college and technical school representatives will answer questions.

Toddler Halloween

Celebrate Halloween with a costume party at 10 a.m. Oct. 31 at Stewart Bowling Center. Dress up your little ones and go trick-or-treating. Stewart Bowling provides the site, party spread, and Capri Sun for trick-or-treaters. Free party, $1 per game of bowling and free shoe use.

Mountain trip

Register until Dec. 31 for a Leisure Travel trip sightseeing, shopping, skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing in the mountains of Gatlinburg Tenn., Jan. 16-18.

The cost is $450 for 1-4 persons per-room in the River Terrace Resort and includes motor coach transportation. There is an additional $50 charge for fifth person. The price does not cover ski and snow board rentals, but military discounts are given.

Body building

The Rock Body Building and Figure Contest Nov. 1 at Woodruff Theater.

Registration costs $35. There is an additional crossover fee of $15. Sign up at Newman Fitness Center.

Weigh-in will be at 8 a.m., prejudging at 10 and the finals at 6:30 p.m. The cost for spectators is $5 for pre-judging and $10 for the finals. Spectators 13 and under are free.

Three places will be awarded seven divisions.

Hot air balloons

Enjoy a Hot Air Balloon Festival with entertainment during the Red, White and Blue Hot Air Balloon Festival Nov. 1 and 2 at Saber Hall on Hunter.

Festival hours are 6:30-10 a.m. and 4-8 p.m. Nov. 1 and 6:30-10 a.m. Nov. 2. Tethered balloon rides will cost $5 per person.

The festival also will include military displays, candy walk, inflatables and food vendors.

The public is invited. Free admission with optional donation.

Managed hunts

Soldiers and retirees can sign up for one of three Outdoor Recreation managed hunts on Fort Stewart this season. Sign up at the Stewart or Hunter Pass and Permit offices.

The Nov. 8 hunt will be in Training Area Delta. Registration deadline is Oct. 29. The second hunt will be Nov. 22 and the registration deadline is Nov. 12. The third hunt will be Dec. 20, with a signup deadline of Dec. 10.

Fifty participants will be selected by lottery. A $10 fee per hunter is payable upon selection.
