We could all use a pick-me-up from time to time a friendly smile, lunch with a friend or an encouraging word.

One dog, Doug the Pug, has set out to cheer up strangers around Nashville, Tennessee. Dogs may be man's best friend, but Doug takes this to a new level.

With an encouraging message hung around his neck, he runs up to individuals to spread cheer. Of course, he gets some good payback with snuggles and scratches. So, what does a dog have to say that would lift others' moods?

  • "You are beautiful no matter what."
  • "You are enough."
  • "You are loved by so many."
  • "Things are never as bad as they seem."
  • "Broken crayons still color."
  • "Never give up. You are worth it."
Each note is signed "Doug the Pug" though it's probably safe to assume Doug had a helpful owner to assist in spreading kindness.

These heartfelt messages are delivered to people on the street, a homeless shelter, a salon and other places. The recipients are surprised and touched by these kind messages.

You don't have to be a dog (or even own one) to spread kind words. Phone calls, texts, emails, handwritten notes or face-to-face conversations are great ways to make others in your life feel special, appreciated and loved. A small act of kindness can make a huge difference in someone's day.

Here are some great ways to encourage your children.
