Robert Lee Walters

Richmond Hill

Robert Lee Walters, age 61, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 27, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Mr. Walters was born on Oct. 5, 1946, in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was a graduate of Clay High School. He served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army, which he retired from in 1991. He was a veteran of both Vietnam and Desert Storm. He received both a Bronze and Silver Star for his service in Vietnam. He was also employed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah Airport Security (TSA) and retired from the Hinesville Police Department in 2001. He was a member of many groups and organizations, including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Khe Sanh Veterans Association, Marine Corps Association, Army National Guard and Darien Lions Club. He was a member of the Christian Baptist Church in Sciotoville, Ohio, Shellman Bluff Baptist Church in Shellman Bluff, Ga. and the Coastal Community Christian Church in Richmond Hill. He also served as Vice-President of the McIntosh County Republican Party.

He was preceded in death by his father, David W. Walters, Sr. and his brother, David W. Walters, Jr.

Survivors include his lovely wife, Wilma Jean Walters; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Walters of Darien; mother, Lydia Douglas of New Boston, Ohio; and brother, Donald Walters of Lucasville, Ohio. Two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends also survive.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Coastal Community Christian Church, Richmond Hill, with Pastor Mark Snavely officiating.

Burial was in Shellman Bluff Baptist Church Cemetery, Shellman Bluff, Ga.

Richmond Hill Funeral Home, Cox Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Book signing set for Pembroke Public Library
J.G. Jakes, author of “The River’s Edge,” will have a book signing from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Pembroke Public Library.
When asked to sum up in one sentence what kind of story “The River’s Edge” is, Jakes said, “It’s an altogether human story: love and hatred, regret and forgiveness, faith and consequences and a cross.”
“The River’s Edge” is about an evil man, a horrible murder, a miscarriage of backwoods justice and a young woman’s vow of revenge.
Jakes was born and raised in Shellman. She now is a retired school teacher.  
“It is my genuine desire to share the grace of God and encourage others as they continue on their Christian journey,” Jakes said.

Fall art show, reception planned for Nov. 8
Arts on the Coast will have its fall art show and reception at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, on the grounds surrounding Leahy Art Gallery in Richmond Hill.
