A Memorial Day

The Dixie Outfitters on Hwy. 17 is hosting a Confederate Memorial Day celebration Saturday, April 26, from 1-3 p.m. at their store. The afternoon will feature a Confederate soldier in full uniform, a woman in period clothing, hamburgers and hotdogs and a good time for everyone. Dixie Outfitters is also celebrating their one year anniversary in Richmond Hill and everyone in the community is invited to stop by the event.

Open house

The Richmond Hill Playing and Specialist daycare center on Harris Trail is having their official grand opening and Open House this weekend, April 26-27.

Mayor Richard Davis will be at the center for the start of Saturday’s Open House at 10 a.m. There will games for children and hamburgers and hotdogs until 4 p.m. Sunday’s Open House will run from noon-3 p.m.

The center cares for children 6-weeks-old through pre-K and provides before and after school care for children up to age 12. For more information, call 756-7527.

Sunset Party

Sunset Party at the Coast will be Saturday, May 3, 4-8 p.m. at the Sunbury Crab Company in Sunbury, Georgia. There is a $5.00 donation to get in the door and all tips benefit American Diabetes Association. There will be live music and there is plenty of dock space available for attendees.

Dr. David Dority and his wife are participating in a team effort to compete in the Celebrity Bartending Challenge to benefit American Diabetes Association. Dority and his team will be accepting donations to count toward their team money prior to the event and will also be taking tips the day of the Bartending Challenge.

GA Cities Week

The City of Richmond Hill will celebrate Georgia Cities Week with music and entertainment at J.F. Gregory Park, beginning at noon on Saturday, April 26.

At noon, The Commissioned Quartet Gospel Singers perform; at 12:30 Dasher’s Music Studio will feature strings, piano, vocal performers; at 1:30 Tatiana Lambert a hip hop singer performs; at 2 p.m. Life Moves Dance Studio performs and at 3 p.m. Journey to Sittabacuttaba Land, sponsored by EducationStations4Kids. There will be free goodie bags for all children who attend this performance.

GA scholarship

The Coastal GA Area Community Action Authority, Inc. joins with the Georgia Community Action Association to announce the availability of one $1,000 scholarship to be awarded on a Statewide basis to Georgia residents who are currently attending a post-high school institution or have been accepted at such an educational institution.

The individual must be income eligible in accordance with Community Services Block Grant guidelines and be successfully judged as a winner in an essay writing competition.

The essay is to be entitled, "What Has the Community Action Movement Meant to My Community," and is to be no more than three (3) typewritten pages, double spaced. Deadline for submission is 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 21.

Eco-friendly art

The new exhibit at Gallery S.P.A.C.E. from May 2-27 is "Reincarnated: Art Showcasing Reduce, Reuse & Recycle."

The exhibition will showcase artists that use found art or recycled materials in their works, like shoes fashioned out of rubber tires, handbags and frames fashioned out of National Geographic magazines, mosaics made from sea glass and sculptures made from old computer parts.

An artists’ reception is set for May 2, 6-8 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The gallery is located at 9 W. Henry Street and free off-street parking is available. For information visit www.savannahga.gov/arts.

Children's crusade

"Magnolia Days"

"Magnolia Days" is a week of events for all Magnolia Manor residents, beginning Sunday, May 11 with a Mother’s Day Lunch and ending Friday May 16 with an Irish Variety Concert and hot dog roast. Other events include an ice cream social, Bingo and a wide variety of musical entertainment.

May 8, the manor's monthly Renaissance Lecture will feature Crysell Stewart of Dimensions art gallery in Savannah. She will be discussing "How to Critique a Painting." New exhibit opening

Leahy Art Gallery, Fine Art and Custom Framing will have the opening of their next art exhibition Friday, May 9.  Join them for a reception with the artists from 5:30 – 9 p.m.  Featured artists include multi-media painter Brian MacGregor, contemporary sculptor Sarah Hagy Volker, RHHS seniors Matt Page and Rachel Sweeney, photographer Michelle McBride and new works by Jim Leahy. Choir fundraiser

The Pete Broxton Youth Choir is having a fundraiser dinner May 17 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The menu consists of fried chicken, potato salad, green beans and roll. Come dine and help support our youth. The price is $8.

Fashion show

McDonald’s of the Richmond Hill Plantation is having a Mother/Daughter Spring Fashion Show Sunday, April 27 from 3-5 p.m. inside the new McDonald's (near Publix).

The fashions for the show will be provided by three local entrepreneurs: Lori Fisher's children's line, Deborah Hollowell's women’s clothing line. All models will be outfitted in accessories by Beverly Kullman. Rabies clinic

Saturday, April 26, the Bryan County 4-H Club will be hosting a rabies clinic from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. at Lanier Primary School.

Blue Star Memorial

On Wednesday, April 30, at 1:30 p.m., the Richmond Hill Garden Club will dedicate a Blue Star Memorial Marker in J.F. Gregory Park at the Veterans Memorial. The Blue Star Memorial Marker has a long history with the Garden Clubs of America. Featured will be members of the Armed Forces, RHHS ROTC, Rifle Drill Team, Chorus and Band. Sonny Dixon, WTOC anchor, will be Master of Ceremony. The public is invited to the dedication ceremony and for light refreshments after the ceremony. Mammograms

St. Joseph’s/Candler will be performing mammograms to screen for breast cancer in its mobile screening unit May 7 and 21 at St. Joseph’s/Candler Medical Group in Pembroke; and May 8 at Bryan County Health Department, Richmond Hill. Appointments are necessary, call 819-6800.

Boy Scout fundraiser

Richmond Hill Boy Scout Troop 527 will host its annual Delicious Chicken Dinner Saturday, May 3, noon-4 p.m. at Richmond Hill United Methodist Church. The dinner includes a half grilled chicken, green beans, potato salad, roll and iced tea (dine in or take out). Tickets are $7 per dinner. Desserts will be sold separately.

The Delicious Chicken Dinner, a long-time Richmond Hill tradition, is Troop 527’s only fund-raiser. Look for Scouts selling tickets around their neighborhoods and local businesses or call 756-4561 to purchase tickets by April 28.

Pembroke yard sale

The city of Pembroke will host its annual City-wide Yard Sale on Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. until noon. Booth spaces are available for $10.00 each. There is no charge for non-profit organizations. If you would like to reserve a booth space, please call Tonya at 653-5554.

Pork fundraiser

The Pembroke Christian Church, Hwy. 280, Pembroke, will be selling grilled pork steak dinners on Saturday, May 3, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Each dinner will include a grilled pork steak, green beans, potato salad, bread, and slice of pound cake for $6. Bulk pork sausage by the pound will also be for sale. Art show

Arts On the Coast will have its third annual Members Art Show April 25-26 at the Wetlands Center in Gregory Park from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. The show is open to the general public and there is no charge to attend.

Top 40 singer

Pembroke United Methodist Church welcomes top 40 Singer Michael Bright in concert Sunday, April 27 at 11 a.m. at the church, located at 102 College Street in Pembroke.

Michael Bright’s music has charted in the Top 40 in the United States. His single, It’s Gonna Be a Good Day, went #1 for two months and stayed in the Top 40 for eight months in the UK.

His concerts uplift the Lord in a unique way through different styles of gospel music such as: Southern Gospel, Country Christian, Big Band and 50’s style.

Lecture signing

The Richmond Hill Historical Society is pleased to present Gary Smiley, author of Seasons of Liberty, as their speaker May 1. This meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Richmond Hill Historical Museum on Ford Avenue, open to the general public at no charge. New hours

The Richmond Hill Historical Society Museum announces its new operating hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday.

They now have a Facilitator on sight to answer questions and guide people through the museum.

Please ask about their monthly lecture series on the impact of our coastal history and how it affects us today. The programs feature local historians, authors, re-enactors and musicians.

BCITC meetings

The Bryan County Interagency Transition Council meets the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m., in the Family Center at the St. Anne’s church.

This parent-driven group aims to support the transition of students with disabilities to live, learn and work in the community. Anyone with input, ideas or questions is encouraged to attend.

Sarah Society

MS bike ride

May is the Georgia Power Savannah Multiple Sclerosis Bike Ride. Event organizers are still looking for teams and volunteers. The event is May 3 and 4 with 40, 60 and 80 mile routes.

There are also several volunteer spots that need to be filled and they are looking for Motorcycle Marshalls to ride the route, making sure everything is moving smoothly, and drivers for the supply vehicles. Ghost tour

The Moving Wall, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veteran’s tribute in Washington, D.C., is coming to Richmond Hill June 12-16.
