Did anyone really think a third Ghostbusters film was happening?

Weve been hearing about a possible third chapter or total reboot for the Ghostbusters franchise for more than 25 years now. Ever since part 2 landed back in 1989, tales of scripts, casting news and even scheduled production dates were as common in movie gossip circles as rumors concerning "Goonies," "Gremlins" and "Top Gun" follow-ups.

So when Paul Feig announced his idea for a way to reinvent the series with female leads, sure, it was fun to talk about, but no one actually thought it would happen. Even as big names started attaching themselves to the project and Sony leaked confirmed details, there was nothing there we hadnt seen before.

That is, until now.

Pictures from the set of the 2016 film recently started hitting the web, revealing new costumes and an updated ECTO-1.

For those of us who never thought wed see this day, this is all surprising enough. But perhaps even more surprising for those following the project is how closely the new look and feel ties back to the originals. Everything coming from Feig up until now has revolved around his new and fresh vision for Ghostbusters. The new photos however, feel more like the reveal of a direct sequel.

To me this is great news. Interviews from Feigs camp had left me wondering why they were even holding onto the Ghostbusters title. Now, I feel this might be something of a love letter to the 1984 classic, and thats pleasant surprise.

Looking at the cast, it should also be noted Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon ended up with the best hair. Wiig has a look that's lifted straight from so many graphic novels, and McKinnon is rocking the Egon look from the animated The Real Ghostbusters."

Im calling this a big win from the marketing team, though theres already a vocal social media outcry that disagrees. But what do you think? Do the latest pictures coming from the Ghostbusters camp give you more faith in the project?

The new Ghostbusters hits theaters July 22, 2016, and stars Melissa McCarthy, Wiig, McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth and Andy Garcia.
