Senior playmaker Jada Brown of the Richmond Hill High School Lady Wildcats’ basketball team has recently put pen to paper, signing to play college basketball for Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina.

This past season was her best year at Richmond Hill, a season that was one of the best in the program’s history. Brown helped lead the Lady ‘Cats to a 19-8 overall record and a 7-3 region record, and a First Team All-Region Honor in the process.

With Newberry College being close by–less than four hours from Richmond Hill–Brown got a sense of a feeling like home in visiting and communicating with coaches, which led to an easy decision.

“I really like the environment,” Brown said. “I also liked how welcoming everyone was, especially the coaches and players.”

With Brown signing to Newberry, she was able to sign to a Division II college, and will be in position to play high level basketball as a result of that.

“It feels great,” Brown said. “I have always hoped to play for at least a Division II program when I was looking for colleges.”

In playing for Newberry, Brown will get a chance to compete against another former Lady Wildcat, MaKiyah Matthews, who signed with Augusta University, out of the 2024 class for Richmond Hill.

“I feel like it would be fun to play against Makiyah,” Brown said. “Kiyah and I have played with or against each other for many years. She has always pushed me to be the best player I can be.”

With her signing to play at the next level, the work of high school basketball is coming to an end, but the real work and goals will begin now that she has signed.

“My main goal is to showcase my talents with my new team,” Brown said. “I also want to have a great season with Newberry.”
