Calvary brush aside Redskins in 42-0 shutout
football

Calvary Day School was every bit as good as advertised and Bryan County unfortunately was next up in the Cavaliers’ path.

Quarterback James Mobley IV followed a five-touchdown passing performance against Metter last week by putting on a passing game clinic in leading the Cavaliers to a 42-0 win over Bryan County Thursday night at the Cavs’ sports complex.

The Redskins pass defense has been suspect all season and Mobley exposed it even more as he hit on his first 12 passes, finishing by hitting 13 of 14 for 208 yards and three touchdowns in the Region 3AA game.

Calvary Day (6-1, 2-0) dominated the game from the opening kickoff as it jumped out to a 14-0 first period lead, extending it to 35-0 at the half. The second half was played with a running clock against the offensive challenged Redskins (0-7, 0-2).

“They’re a real good football team,” Coach Cherard Freeman said. “We’ve got a good football team but we never had a chance. There was nothing we could do about it.”

The Cavaliers, with 19 starters back from a 12-2 team that lost in the Class 3A Private state championship game, wasted no time in taking charge of the game. They took the opening kickoff and marched 90 yards with Ca’Den Jones getting the score on a 21-yard run to close it out. Mobley then hit Ty Pinckney on the two-point conversion.

Bryan County attempted to answer when it took the ensuing kickoff, and thanks to a 9-yard pass from Jamariyan Cosey to Kmari Dixon, picked up a first down on its initial series but then three running plays netted two yards forcing a punt by Gerome Lee.

Unfortunately, the Cavs’ De’Shawn Wylie blocked the punt giving his team possession at the Redskins’ 27-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Mobley hit Pinckney going down the right side for an easy touchdown.

Although the conversion attempt failed with 4:09 left in the first quarter the Cavaliers had a 14-0 lead and the hand writing was on the way for the beleaguered Redskins who suffered their third straight shutout. They have now gone 14 quarters without a touchdown.

Bryan County was limited to 43 yards on the night on 29 plays. The Redskins had 36 yards rushing and Cosey completed two of 10 passes for seven yards while being picked off once.

The Redskins had two first downs, the second coming on a pass interference call on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Calvary made it 21-0 when Mobley teamed up with Jalen Hicks on a 24-yard scoring strike. The next two touchdowns came courtesy of a 3-yard run by Jicks and with 13 seconds left in the half Mobley hit Marlon Knight in the left flat and he walked in untouched from 7 yards out.

“This is what you can expect when you play a team that has seven Division I commits,” Freeman said. “They’ve got a lot of talent.”

The Cavs’ final score came near the end of the third quarter when sophomore reserve running back Matt Gadsen scored on an 8-yard run.

The 5-foot-8 Mobley, a compact 185-pound senior, has now completed 71 per cent of his passes for 1,673 yards and 19 touchdowns. He has been intercepted twice.

The Redskins defense did have one highlight moment in the second quarter when it forced the Cavs to turn the ball over on downs at the 3-yard line. Calvary had a first down at the three but four running plays failed to gain an inch.

Bryan County will be idle until Oct. 23 when it hosts Metter. The Tigers (0-6, 0-1) play at Savannah Christian (2-4, 1-0) on Friday night. The Redskins then face Savannah Christian and Savannah High (0-6, 0-1) to close out the season.
