Can a three-win team make the state football playoffs? It’s a possibility, especially if you’re a Class 2A school.
And Bryan County coach Cherard Freeman is not discounting his team’s chances of doing just that starting with Friday night when the winless Redskins (0-7, 0-2) host another winless team in Metter (0-7, 0-2).
“I’ve been studying them,” Freeman said of the GHSA’s post-season power rankings which determine the 32-team playoff field. “If we could win our last three games it will be interesting to see what happens.”
The Redskins are currently No. 55 in the PSR but Class 2A is loaded with private schools—18 to be exact—and they’re all ranked ahead of Bryan County. With the private schools having their own playoffs, this means that Freeman’s team is 37th among public schools, or five spots removed from a playoff berth.
The teams ahead of the Redskins are not exactly world beaters, either.
For example, the No. 31 team is one-win Oglethorpe County (1-7) and Glenn Hills (3-4) is at No. 32. Teams between Bryan County and Glenn Hills are Gordon-Lee (3-5), Jefferson County (2-5), Utopian Academy (2-3) and Lakewood-Ft. Oglethorpe (1-6).
While it’s a longshot at best, Freeman is dangling the playoff carrot in front of his team to keep it motivated as it gets ready to square off against the Tigers, Savannah Christian (3-4) and Savannah High (0-7).
Bryan County, like Metter, is coming off an open date in which Redskins coaches were looking for answers to fixing an offense which, to be kind, is on the anemic side. The Redskins are averaging a mere 83.8 yards per game on offense, 57.4 on the ground. They are averaging 6.5 points per game while allowing 26.
Sophomore quarterback Jamariyan Cosey leads the team in rushing with 179 yards and he has passed for another 185. Junior Gerome Lee has 111 yards rushing.
Bryan County is coming off a 42-0 loss at Calvary Day School. For comparison purposes the week before the Cavaliers put a similar whipping on Metter with a 54-7 win.
Calvary, obviously, is the class of Region 3-2A which is weaker than usual.
The Redskins’ non-region teams have an overall 23-12 record headed by Portal (7-1) and Treutlen County (6-2). Region teams are 23-12 with Calvary (6-1) and Screven County (6-1) leading the way. They play at CDS on Oct. 30.
If the Redskins can knock off Metter, a team which has dominated them over the years including a 35-0 win last year to knock Bryan County out of the playoffs, then the scoreboard watching can begin. For a week at least.
