• RHHS hosts Effingham County, 6 p.m.

With the Region 3-AAAAA softball tournament nearing, the Richmond Hill Lady Wildcats are playing their best at an opportune time.

The Lady Wildcats defeated Wayne County 5-2 in a non-region game Tuesday for their 10th win in the last 11 games.

Lyndsey Boone had two hits for Richmond Hill (18-6). Wayne County scored a run in the top of the sixth to pull within 3-2, but RHHS answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Sam Mault pitched the first four innings, allowing one run while striking out four batters. Morgan Hunter gave up a run and had two strikeouts over the final three innings.

It was the second strong outing in as many days for Mault, who hurled a complete game in the Lady Wildcats’ 3-1 win at Liberty County on Monday. The senior ace allowed four hits and struck out six through seven innings.

Madelyn Gorsuch and Jess Kifferly each went 2 for 3 with a run batted in to lead the Richmond Hill offense.

Mault was at her best, though, on Friday, pitching a no-hitter in an 8-0 shutout of Statesboro. She struck out 10 before the game was called by run rule after six innings.

Hannah Fitzgerald had two hits and three RBIs as the Lady Wildcats raised their region record to 6-1. Adrianna Garrett and Haley Taylor added two hits each, and Taylor drove in two runs.

The result of Richmond Hill’s non-region game Wednesday against McIntosh County Academy was not available at press time. The Lady Wildcats wrap up the regular season at home at 6 tonight against region foe Effingham County.
