A late Metter fourth-quarter touchdown broke a 10-10 tie and gave the Tigers a 16-10 win over Bryan County Saturday in Region 2-AA football.

Redskins Coach Allen Cartwright said his team blocked the extra point, then got the ball back after a turnover but ran out of time.

“We’re more of a ball control team and playing a hurry up game with time running out isn’t our strong suit,” he said. “I thought our defense played well and gave us a chance to be in it.”

Bryan County got on the scoreboard first with a Christian Thomas field goal, but trailed 10-7 at halftime. A 39-yard touchdown pass from Gage Hagan to Willie Lavant in the third quarter tied the game. Lavant also had 13 carries for 30 yards. Malik Bostick led the defense with nine tackles, while Conner Schaffer added seven.

The game, originally scheduled for Friday night, was rescheduled to Saturday morning after Bryan County Schools was closed all week due to Hurricane Matthew. Cartwright said he didn’t think missed practices and having players gone during and after the storm was much of a difference.

“You never have as much time as you need,” he said. “It’s just time to move forward and focus on our next game.”

The Redskins, now 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the region, host Jeff Davis for homecoming at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
