Simply by pledging to be good sports, people in the community can help Richmond Hill’s wrestling programs receive a $2,500 grant.

Richmond Hill Wrestling is in the running for one of five $2,500 grants in Liberty Mutual Insurance’s Play Positive campaign. The grants will be awarded to the five programs nationwide that receive the most online pledges to promote good sportsmanship in youth sports.

If Richmond Hill earns one of the grants, the money would go toward buying wall mats for the wrestling practice area at Richmond Hill High School. Renovations are nearly finished to avacant building on the RHHS campus to be used as a wrestling practice facility for Richmond Hill’s school and youth teams.

“The wall mats will be a great asset to ensure safety and usability of the building,” said Bill Evans, who coaches the high school and youth programs. “This will benefit the wrestlers from our growing youth, middle and high school programs.”

Richmond Hill Wrestling needs a push to receive one of the grants, currently sitting in seventh place in the standings.The campaign ends at 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 15.

With $2,500, Richmond Hill Wrestling could purchase nearly half the wall mats it needs, Evans said.Children as young as 5 years old up to high school seniors will use the practice facility, he added.
