Basketball: Winter weather postpones Bryan County games

Bryan County’s boys were coming off perhaps their best win of the season, a 59-42 pasting of Portal at Portal, and Coach Jason Napier was hoping that was a prelude to a strong finish in the final three weeks of the season.

However, any momentum generated by that game was put on hold this week by the weather as Tuesday night’s game with Metter and Friday night’s game at Savannah High have been postponed. School officials were working on getting the games rescheduled but as of Tuesday evening both Napier and girls coach Mario Mincey said nothing had been determined.

The win at Portal was significant for the boys as it meant they had swept the Panthers on the season, having won earlier at home. Portal has literally owned the Redskins. Going into this season Bryan County, per Max Prep records dating back to 2006, was 4-29 against Portal and had never posted a regular season sweep. The wins came in 2022, 2018, 2017 and 2009.

Bryan County’s next regularly scheduled game is Tuesday night at home against Screven County. The Redskins (11-6, 5-5) are in a tight battle for third-place in the Region 3A-DII race with Screven (7-8, 6-4), Jenkins County (8-8, 5-4) and Portal (8-11, 5-5). McIntosh County Academy (15-3, 9-0) and Savannah (14-4, 9-1) have a lock on the top two spots.

The Redskins girls are (16-2, 9-1) and ranked No. 3 in the state by the AJC. They’re tied for first in the region race with No. 7 Metter (11-2, 9-1) with No. 9 Screven (12-4, 8-2) lurking in the wings. No one else is remotely contending for the regular season title and top seed for the region tournament.

Mincey’s team gets Screven on Tuesday night and Metter whenever the two can get a date.

Bryan County’s wrestling team will celebrate Senior Night with a 5 p.m. home match Friday with Glenn Hills. That match was scheduled for Wednesday but postponed when schools were closed.
