Pembroke Mafia Football League: Nothing better than fall weather
football

Alex Floyd, Local Columnist

Most people look forward to the later part of the football season when it actually feels like, ya’ know, football season. Football at 90+ degrees just doesn’t have the same luster.

I somewhat enjoy watching football from the pool though. That’s just one of the many things that make football in the South great is we play in all four seasons: Hotter, Hot, Hurricane and Fall.

Personally, I was blessed Saturday morning with cooler weather at Duval Henderson Park to watch the mighty-mighty 8U redskins led by center Ellis Floyd play their first scrimmages. Lil’ E struggles to stay pinned down in a stiff breeze so center wasn’t my first guess, but he did exceptionally well. Congrats to Coach Cory Parker and his ‘staff’ on a great start.

Week 0 football started off with Bill Belichick’s Tarheels defeating the Horned Frogs 15-10, Virginia defeating NC State 34-8, North Dakota State whopping Jax 33-7 and FSU defeating NM St 34-17. Thursday night’s games TBD.

• This week we have ‘The U’ of Miami going to Stanford: The Pembroke Football Mafia League selects the Hurricanes unanimously.

• The Flames of Liberty coming to the Dukes of James Madison University: Doc, Jeff, Carter and Noah pick Liberty; Mike B, Mike C, BJ, Bob, Ted Me, and Ben pick JMU.

• Kent State v. University of South Carolina: We pick the Gamecocks unanimously in honor of our own Kickin’ Chicken Jefferson P. Whitten, Esq.

• Boise at Oregon. A northwest classic. I’ve never been out that far but I believe Doc and Donna and a dog named ‘Juana went there in the famous camper on one of their expeditions. Mrs. Donna drives while Doc DJ’s, cooks, navigates and takes calls from Chairman Carter. I think he got the raw end of the deal. Me, Bob and Carter got Boise; everyone else picks Oregon.

• Baylor Bears square off in Jordan Hare against the Auburn Tigers: Doc, Jeff, Mike B, Mike C, BJ, Ted, Carter and Ben and Noah take the Tigers; Me and Bob think the Bears will pull the upset.

• Maine at Appalachian State: We pick Mountaineers across the board.

• The Week 1 Clemson- LSU smackdown returns for a third year, this time in Baton Rouge. Kickoff is at 7:30 but the moon isn’t full, so Clemson has a chance. Doc, the Mikes, BJ, Ted, Ben and Noah pick LSU; Jeff, Me, Bob and Carter pick Clumpson. • Louisiana-Monroe at Mississippi St: We select Mississippi St.

• We have two Sunday games this week. First, Wisconsin at Notre Dame: Doc, Jeff, the Mikes, Ted, Carter, Ben and Noah pick Notre Dame; Me and Bob pick Wisconsin.

• Finally, Louisville goes to Ole Miss: We got Ole Miss.
