What will be said about us?

The other day I was driving down the road and I passed a cemetery. I started thinking about different people who I used to know but are no longer with us. I started thinking of people who I thought a lot of who left a good impression upon this world. I also thought of some who through some bad decisions will be remembered for the results of those decisions. If who we are and what we represented were carved on our tomb stone what could it say about us?

Proverbs 22:1 reminds us that “a good name is more desirable than riches”. People won’t remember us so much for what we had but how much we gave back to make our world a better place. If we are a follower of Jesus, they will remember the words we spoke about Him and the life lived because of Him. A few years ago, my wife and I visited an old cemetery at St. Simons at Christ’s Church. I was so impressed when we came across where Eugenia Price, a famous author, was buried. I expected the words on the grave marker to say how wonderful and popular she was but instead it identified her only as a servant of God and it gave all honor to Him.

The truth is that each one of us will eventually leave this life we now live, but the good news is that when we leave, we can be truly missed and remembered for the good witness we have left behind.
