Take time for God today

We need to realize the value of our souls. In Matthew 18 Jesus tells of the shepherd that has a lost sheep and how he goes to retrieve the lamb. Then He said, “Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish” (Mat 18:14). To God every soul is important. We too must realize the importance of the soul.

God has blessed us with the time we have now to prepare for eternal life. It is up to us to take advantage of these blessings.

Yet how easy is it to get caught up in all the cares of this life? It takes a constant effort to keep our mind on the goal set before us. That is probably why there are so many warnings against worldliness in God’s word.

Despite what some may think, Jesus taught that hell is a reality, “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal” (Matt.

25:46). Who would dare contradict the Son of God? It is a place that is so horrible James wrote, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14). What a great reminder of life’s brevity as it can be seen many times during a year. It is this brevity that should cause everyone to seek God and follow His word all their life. Sadly that is not the case. Men live and act as if death and judgment will never come. In fact, it seems that many only think of these things as they attend funerals of friends and loved ones. They just do not believe it will happen to them. Thinking they have plenty of time they sooth their souls by saying, “One day I will follow God, one day”. The sincerity of these people should not be in doubt, for they do mean to look into these things one day. However, that day never comes for so many because they allow other things to fill their minds and time.

Instead of “Some Day” man needs to start today getting on the right track. One needs to get a Bible and start learning about God’s love for man. Some find it hard to believe that God would be concerned about them, but He is. He cares for everything and everybody, “Therefore I say unto you, ake no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? (Matt. 6:25-30) Imagine the God who created all things cares for each and every person on the face of the earth.

God’s word will help one to learn about the Church that Christ built and for which He died; “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matt. 16:18); “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost that we fail in our imaginations to comprehend its terror. Look at the text of Luke 13:27 – 28; “But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth,…” Hell is a reality.

When Jesus told of the account of the rich man and Lazarus, He opened the portals of hell just for a few moments. The pain and agony that is being suffered by the rich man is for eternity. Pain felt today in our world is soon relieved by some type of pain reliever, but for this pain there is no relief. The rich man desired only a drop of water to cool his tongue, but even that was refused. Anyone who has ever suffered from dire thirst knows that one drop of water would not even begin to help ease the torture of thirst, much less one engulfed in flames as was this man.

The Hebrew writer gave this warning when he wrote wrote, “If we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden underfoot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood” (Acts 20:28). It will teach a person how to become a member of the body of Christ – the Church; and how to live a life that is pleasing to God.

God wants all to be saved. He allowed man to crucify Jesus, this was in His plan for man’s salvation (Acts 2:23). The Bible gives examples of how people in the first century obeyed the Gospel and were saved (Acts 2:37,38; Acts 8:4-13; 26-39; Acts 9:120; 22:6-16; Acts16:13-15, 23-34). It also tells man that he must remain faithful to God, no matter what (I Cor. 15: 1-4; Rev. 2:10).

You might still say, “Well, some day, I will”. Just remember “One day” this life will be over and there will be no more tomorrows. As the Hebrew writer said, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” (Heb. 9:27). Make the start today.
