Dear Editor:
With every new mailer from the Georgia Republican Party, the deception gets bigger. This week’s episode claims that under Trump, total savings for Americans increased by 393%. Their own reference (fred.stlouisfed.org/series/ PSAVE) pointed out the truth.
Savings rates stayed pretty steady for his first three years until COVID came along. The March 2020 stimulus poured $2T dollars into the economy to jump start a stalled economy, with $1,200 checks sent to everyone. No surprise that savings spiked nearly 400% soon after, all fed with your tax dollars. Rates fell for the next several months, then a $600 stimulus was approved on December 27 and Biden followed with a $1,400 check on March 11, 2021. These two produced a second spike in quarterly savings rates.
The headline on the mailer says “President Trump’s policies made Americans wealthier – he will do it again”. Perhaps a more accurate one would be “Trump's failed economic policies required massive stimulus to dig out from recession, and he’ll almost certainly do it again”.
