Letter to the editor: Reader decries wasteful spending
LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Editor:

The BOE has decided to opt out of HB-581, the “Save our Homes Act” and give themselves unlimited power to raise our property taxes.. As the great President Ronald Reagan said: “We don’t have a revenue problem here. We have a spending problem!”

Fact Checkers have Discovered: The last 4 years, the student population in Bryan County has increased 8 % per year...but the BOE income has increased 49%. Since 2021, the median income in Bryan County has increased 18%... while the BOE income has increased 49% We have a new $65 million high school that is now 34 % over budget. ($98 million+) The Truth is: our B.O.E. has plenty of money.

There has been a $1020 million budget surplus yearly for the last 15 years. (Where did that go?)

The Hyundai corporation has promised an additional $72 million for our school system.

We have a Superintendent whose salary is $343,000 a year. (Gov Kemp = $180,000 yr) (Do you really think our superintendent’s job is more important that our Governors?)

We have 52 additional employees with a salary over $100,000/year ($5.2 million+)... and they want to raise our taxes because they “Don’t have enough money.”

* No, We don’t have a Revenue Problem - we have a problem with “Greed.”

Greed = “A selfish & excessive desire for more of something than is needed.” -Webster I am a college professor.

I have been involved in Education all my life. (50+ years) My Father was a Superintendent of Schools for 30 years. I’ve seen good ones & bad ones.

We don’t have a revenue problem - we have a problem with Bad Leadership.

I’ve been around Boards of Education all my life-My Dad used to share his insights with me.

We don’t have a revenue problem - we have a problem with our B.O.E.

This BOE has a severe lack of Transparency, Accountability, Common Sense & Courage.

This Board has stopped listening to the voice of the people...who they represent.

They have become Proud & Arrogant. They are no longer good “public servants.”

No, We don’t have a problem with Revenue- we have a problem with Pride.

The Bible Says: “Pride goes before destruction & a haughty spirit before a fall.” - Prov 16:18 The Solution: Our BOE needs to humble themselves & start listening to “We the People.”
