“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mt 11:28) I believe this verse from the Gospel of Matthew perfectly describes the feelings and struggles of many people today.
When Jesus spoke these words over 2,000 years ago, those who listened to Him faced political oppression, religious divisions, and social unrest. Shortly afterward, John the Baptist was killed by King Herod. Just as with all of Jesus’ words, these continue to echo through the centuries, bringing peace, trust, and rest to people’s hearts. *Come to me,* Jesus says.
In a world filled with social media, countless talking heads, and voices competing for our attention from every direction, many of us have become weary and confused. The truth seems elusive, and life without truth is exhausting. Jesus promises—and as always, He delivers—I will give you rest, just come to me!
In a few months, our country will vote for a new president. We can already see how divided our nation has become, and with it, families, parish communities, and society in general. But Jesus does not want division, for it wounds the human family.
He desires unity, love, and peace.
That is why every Thursday at 8 p.m., we gather here at St. Anne Catholic Church in Richmond Hill to pray before the Blessed Sacrament. We pray for our country and offer reparation for sins committed against Jesus in the Eucharist. Through prayer, we find peace, heal the wounds of division, and regain the hope that is so desperately needed today.
St. Paul once said, *”If God is for us, who can be against us?”* Let’s make sure that not only is God with us, but that we are with Him. Then, we will experience His peace and rest in Him.
