Dads! Our great big strong Dads. Always knew what to do and how to get it done. 

When I was growing up almost all the boys had dads. They were concerned about their homes, assisted moms with discipline and when needed they made sure that schoolwork was taken care of. A bad report from mom brought correction from dad, and believe me, it worked. I loved my dad and was very close to him. He was a preacher and yet was one of the bravest men I ever knew. Kind of hard to think about preachers being brave perhaps, but let me tell you a story.

My father was leading a small country church through a building program. His main ministerial work was located in Savannah. He was the lead pastor of a sizable church and had a substantial radio ministry as well. Yet here he was assisting the establishment of a small country church. A serious problem arose after having purchased a lot on which to build and then completing the project. The person who originally sold the lot to the church then sold the large tract of land without removing the small section sold to the church.

The new owner tried to reclaim the land even though a bill of sale and a deed were produced. He built a fence around the church and threatened to kill anyone who crossed the fence. A simple mistake of not marking off a small section of land on a plat almost brought disaster.

My dad determined not to lose the church building and property, so he made arrangements for his funeral in case he was killed. He went to the church, crossed the fence, went inside the church and prayed. He claimed the church for Christ, and he won. The church has been there for years and blessed many people.

This is just one of many stories I could tell about my dad. It is sad to see so many children being reared in homes without their fathers. Our society has become so lax in our commitment towards our families that we have lost the role models of fathers. I was once involved in interviewing a teenager and heard him respond that a girl he knew was not his girlfriend, just his sex partner. Perhaps we need to read again Malachi 2:13-15 where the Lord charges the Israelites with mistreating their young wives, causing them to cover the altar with their tears. God was refusing to honor their offerings or answer their prayers. He wanted children to be taught the righteousness of God, and parents were failing to do so. Fathers, get involved in the lives of your children. Be a Christian role model for them. Be a DAD!
