The substance found Thursday at the Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith Army Education Center here tested negative for biological agents, according to Fort Stewart officials.

In a press release from post spokesman Kevin Larson, the substance was described as a small amount of gritty dust by Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield emergency personnel, and was not powdery.

Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield emergency personnel responded appropriately to the incident to ensure the safety of the employees and students, PAO said, noting the building was evacuated as a safety precaution and classes were cancelled in the building. As a precaution, five people who found the substance went through a decontamination process and medical evaluation by a doctor.

The education center is open today and the cancelled classes have been rescheduled.

The incident continues to be under investigation by law enforcement, officials said.
