Matter of record: Police were sent to a Highway 17 motel around 12:35 a.m. Sept. 9 for “an initial complaint regarding car keys and a baby being taken.”

The man was White, heavyset, with white hair and in his 60s, and was driving a black car. Police found the car in the parking lot and as they were looking at it the man came up and admitted he was the one who talked to the complainant.

“He stated he figured she was down on her luck and was offering to give her some money to help with the baby,” the report said.

“He advised he didn’t mean to frighten her.” The report said there were no signs of any criminal activity and no way to learn the “man’s true intentions.”
