In a letter to parents, Bryan County Schools announced that students in Richmond Hill will return back to school on Wednesday, but that schools in the Pembroke area will remain closed until Oct. 9.
"As we continue to navigate the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, our priority is to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, our north Bryan (Pembroke Area) schools remain without power and will stay closed until students return from fall break, Wednesday, October 9, 2024. Additionally, approximately 40-50% of our staff who support these schools are also still without power and unable to return to work as well as some roads are impassable for buses.," the district said.
"On a brighter note, all of our south Bryan (Richmond Hill area) schools have power restored, and will return to normal operations tomorrow."
The district added, "We recognize that many families across both north and south Bryan are still dealing with the storm's impact, and we want to support you as much as possible during this challenging time. Our goal is to bring a sense of normalcy back to our students and families where we can."
The following schools will reopen tomorrow:
- Richmond Hill Primary School
- Richmond Hill Elementary School
- Carver Elementary School
- Frances Meeks Elementary School
- McAllister Elementary School
- Richmond Hill Middle School
- Richmond Hill High School
For families in the Richmond Hill area who are unable to return due to ongoing storm-related challenges, the district said absences will be excused.
Before/afterschool and Community Education programs in the Richmond Hill area will operate as usual. However, these programs will remain suspended in the Pembroke area until we return from fall break.
