J.F. Gregory Park was abuzz with hundreds of people throughout the night Friday as they celebrated, remembered and fought back with the American Cancer Society as part of the 2013 Bryan County Relay for Life.
The annual all-night walking event in Bryan County raised around $5,500 on Friday according to American Cancer Society Community Manager Sara Jane Fogarty. That was added to their previous fundraising efforts to bring the total to just over $32,000 raised so far.
“We are still actively fundraising until Aug. 31,” Fogarty said on Tuesday. “We will have smaller fundraising events over the summer, but we do have an upcoming Relay Recess at Carver Elementary School (on May 21).”
The event host, Julie Pecenka, told the crowd during opening ceremonies participants would walk through the night to represent a cancer patient’s journey.
“Just as we will be exhausted and weak, so are they,” she told the crowd.
