A North Bryan congregation that is more than 100 years old is turning its focus toward youth with a new construction project.

Pembroke Christian Church recently broke ground for a new social hall that will primarily be used for its expanding youth programs.

“We’ve seen a growth in the numbers of our youth program, and we recently hired a youth minister,” said Bill Bacon, the chairman of the church’s board of directors. “We’re planning for the future.”

Bacon said the 80-foot-by-60-foot structure will be on the church’s property but will be separate from the current church and hall. It will have seating for 200 people, restrooms and a kitchen.

“If we ever do need it for Sunday services, there’s plenty of room,” Bacon said. “We average about 80 people per Sunday right now.”

A stage will be added for holding plays and concerts.

“It’s really meant as a place for the youth group to call their own,” Bacon added.

The facility should be finished in time for the church’s annual revival/homecoming in October.
