Landfill request denied

Applause erupted from a standing room-only crowd Tuesday as the Bryan County Commissioners voted to deny requests from landfill developer Atlantic Waste Services.

The solid waste management company had proposed a 268-acre landfill in the Black Creek community of North Bryan County and sought changes to the ordinance the company says prohibits a landfill from being built in the county.

The denial came after a unanimous recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commisison to disapprove the requests, and after months of supportive efforts from Atlantic Waste and opposing efforts from a group of residents against the landfill.

One of those residents, Roy Goodman, shook hands and celebrated with other opponents in the room after the vote.

"We did it," he said. "We did it."
