Fort Stewart commander to speak at RH Veterans Day ceremony

The City of Richmond Hill will observe Veterans Day on Thursday, November 11, at 11 a.m. in J. F. Gregory Park. The observance will honor those who have served and continue to serve our country in the armed services.

 The event will feature the Color Guard from Fort Stewart, a 21-gun salute and laying of the wreath. Col. Peter J. Moon, commander of 1ABCT at Fort Stewart, will be the guest speaker.

 The public is invited for this special ceremony.  Donations of new socks for homeless veterans will also be collected at this event.

Col. Moon was commissioned as an infantry officer from the United States Military Academy in 1998. Upon completion of training at Fort Benning, GA, he served in 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division as a Rifle Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer.

 Following the Infantry Captains Career Course, Moon served in 2d Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2d Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, and HHC, 2 BCT, 4th ID in staff and company command positions. He then served as a Captain’s Assignment Officer, Infantry Branch, Human Resources Command, followed by field grade assignments in 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and Defense Coordinating Element, U.S. Army North. COL Moon commanded 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2d Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, then served as ACoS, G3, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, KS. 

Upon completion of US Army War College, he served as a Senior Advisor to the Afghanistan Ministry of Defense at Headquarters, Resolute Support. His operational deployments include multiple nations in the CENTCOM and EUCOM areas of responsibility. 

 Moon holds master’s degrees in Strategic Studies from the Army War College, Public Policy and Administration from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from USMA. 

His awards and decorations include Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medals, Ranger Tab, Senior Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Expert Infantryman Badge.
