Bryan schools to be closed on Wednesday
schools closed

Public schools in Bryan County will be closed Wednesday due to expected impacts from Hurricane Idalia.

Here is the information supplied by the school district:

The safety of our students and staff continues to be our highest priority as we make decisions regarding the weather. We were hoping Hurricane Idalia might take a different path, but during our most recent interaction with Bryan County Emergency Services and National Weather Service we were advised of the strong possibility of this storm impacting Bryan County tomorrow afternoon. Considering this most recent update, we are unwilling to take a risk with the safety of our students or staff. Also, we need to give our families and 1,600 employees time to prepare for the possible impacts of Hurricane Idalia.

As a result, Bryan County Schools will be closed Wednesday, August 30, 2023, for all students and staff. All extracurricular and after-school activities scheduled for tomorrow will also be cancelled. We will make a determination about Thursday as soon as we are able to assess the impacts of Hurricane Idalia on our schools.

Whenever we make a determination about cancelling school and closing our district, Bryan County School District officials spend hours studying as much quality information as possible prior to making this determination. Particularly in the case of making a future decision based on projections and predictions, it is important that we study as much information as is available to us. It is also important to remember that making decisions based on weather predictions can be a very difficult call. Even though we understand that the path and impact of Hurricane Idalia could be different than we have been advised at this point, we feel that closing the district Wednesday, August 30th is in everyone’s best interest.

We hope all our students, staff, parents, and the entire Bryan County community remain safe as Hurricane Idalia passes through our area.
