Light Up the Night, other commemorations Friday

"Guardians of the Galaxy,” rated PG-13, is next up in the Holbrook Movies Under the Stars series. “Guardians” will be shown starting at 8:30 p.m. Friday. There’s no charge and movie-goers are asked to bring chairs or blankets. Popcorn and drinks will be sold.

 

Discounted bowling

Stewart Bowling Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary by offering games for 50 cents per person and shoe rental for 50 cents per person from 1-9 p.m. Friday. For more information, call 767-4273.  

 

Light Up the Night

The Light Up the Night Glow 5K Run/Walk and After Party will be Friday on at Newman Field.

A Patriots Day commemoration, in remembrance of all who perished on 9/11, will start at 7 p.m. at Cottrell Field. It will serve as a closing ceremony for 3rd ID's Sept. 11 Memorial Ruck March and the opening of MWR's Light Up the Night 5K event. 

FMWR extends a special invitation to fetired, active and veteran first responders, emergency service members and Gold Star Families to be part of the commemoration. Those in attendance also are encouraged to take part in the 5K run and other aspects of Light Up the Night.

The run costs adults $40 per person, payable onsite. Cost for youths 11 and younger is $10. Participants receive T-shirts, race bibs, glow glasses and glow necklaces.

The After Party will feature a black light zone, bounce houses, giant Jenga, life-size Pong, other outdoor games and a deejay.

Bowling Center renovation  

There will be no bowling, but the Corner Café at Stewart Bowling Center will serve customers during a renovation project Sept. 15-30.

New Glo Bowl lanes, as well as new carpet and tile will be installed. Bowling will resume Oct. 1.

Hours for the Corner Café will be 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and noon-6 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 767-4273. 

 

Free golf clinic

A free golf clinic, open to beginners and intermediate golfers, men and women, will be from 4-5 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Taylors Creek Golf Course driving range. Participants are asked to register by Sept. 14. For more information, call 767-2370.

 

Blues, Brews & BBQ

Hinesville Area Arts Council hosts the Blues, Brews & BBQ from 1-11:30 p.m. Sept. 19. The free event will include a barbecue competition and sales, sweet tea competition, a variety of beer, family fun and music. The festival will be in downtown Hinesville (behind Justice Center on Main Street). This year's headliner is Janiva Magness, the second only woman to have won the B.B. Strongman/strongwoman

Registration is under way for the Strongman/Strongwoman Competition at Johnson Fitness Center on Sept. 19. Cost is $15 per person. Sign up at Johnson or Newman fitness centers. Weigh-in is at 8:30 a.m. and the competition at 10. Open to active duty, retirees and DA civilians, who will compete in five events like tire flip and farmers walk. Team jersey dance

A Favorite Team Jersey Dance will be from 7-10 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Youth Center. The dance will feature a deejay, refreshments, games and door prizes. Participants are asked to wear their favorite team jersey. For more information, call 767-4491.

 

Miniature golf

Celebrate the beginning of fall with a deal on miniature golf at Cypress Creek from noon-6 p.m. Sept. 20. Try out the Adventure Golf while putting around the course. Cost is $1 per game per person. For more information, call 767-4273.

 

College Probe

College Probe, from 8:30-11:15 a.m. Sept. 25 at Bradwell Institute, lets students, parents and Soldiers learn more about post-secondary options, financial assistance and scholarships. Kids fishing

Military youth (ages 16 and under) are invited to go fishing from 7-10 a.m. Sept. 26 at Hallstrom Lake (off S. Perimeter Road). Permit and state fishing license fees waived and there’s no charge. Limit of five catfish per child. Prizes. Drinks and snacks available. Limited amount of bait, along with poles to borrow will be handed out. So bring your fishing pole. Crossfit warrior

Registration is under way for the CrossFit Fort Stewart Warrior Challenge on Oct. 24 at Caro Fitness Center. The cost is $30 per person through Oct. 15 and $35 per person later.
