Special sets, vintage sci/fi, cookbooks available Saturday

It’s that time again – the Richmond Hill Friends of the Library will hold its bi-monthly book sale on 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the library.

This one promises to be the best ever as, according to Gloria Shearin who coordinates the book sales, FOL has more books to offer than at any of its previous sales.

Along with the usual hardback and paperback fiction ($1 and 50¢ each), FOL will offer many Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series, Harry Potter, plus current and vintage sci-fi/fantasy books, including some Game of Thrones series.  The selection for this sale is so wide-ranging, it would be impossible to mention everything.

FOL will also offer sets at special discounted prices. Although some of these are volumes sold originally as a set, book room staff members have packaged books by individual authors and others pertaining to the same subject. There is a set about the “lost continent” of Atlantis, several about Princess Diana, Native Americans, styles of cooking, sci-fi authors and crafts to name a few.  Some of these sets are priced at 50¢.

There are lots of cookbooks, both vintage and modern.  Now is a good time to search for volumes to complete a set of Southern Living annual recipes, to find a book featuring gluten-free recipes or one focusing on a particular vegetable, think kale, for example, or to explore recipes from an unfamiliar culture, like Thai.

The children’s and young adult books are so numerous they are almost spilling out of the small conference room allotted to them. Along with these – many in pristine condition – are new teaching aids and learning tools for toddlers.

The African American section is larger than usual, history/war/military books are overflowing shelves, and the humor section has both old favorites like Lewis Grizzard and newer ones like Jeff Foxworthy. There is literally something for any reader.

As in previous sales, FOL will offer two raffles for a Barnes and Noble $25 gift card and a gift certificate from Flashback.  Tickets are $1.

The sale will be a wonderful opportunity to get a head start on holiday shopping or to indulge in a special book while also supporting a worthwhile cause. FOL is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to supporting the library in South Bryan County. Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase best sellers and large print volumes and to fill other needs of the library.
