diabetes walk

The 23nd annual American Diabetes Association’s “Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes” fall fundraising campaign will kick off from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Hampton Inn and Suites Midtown, 20 Johnston St. in Savannah.

All registered team captains are invited, and anyone who would like to be a team captain can register on-site. To register as a team captain or individual walker, go to www.diabetes.org/savannahstepout.

The eighth annual Hugh H. Armstrong Sr. Memorial Kayak for a Kure will be held Saturday, Aug. 29, at Butterbean Beach, starting with registration at 8 a.m. Kayakers of all skill levels are encouraged to participate in the kayak paddle, which will kick off from the beach at 9 a.m. and will run the 3-mile course to the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service Aquarium. The cost is $50 per kayaker and includes entry, Chipotle lunch and live music. Old Town Trolleys will be at the UGA Marine Extension Service Aquarium to escort all attendees back to their vehicles on Butterbean once they finish the paddle. Single and tandem kayaks are available upon request and are included in the registration fee on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The main event will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, at Forsyth Park in Savannah, with registration and continental breakfast starting at 8 a.m. After a warm-up, walkers will travel around outer pathways of Forsyth Park.

The Step Out event also will feature a large health and fitness festival from 8 a.m. to noon with several free blood-glucose and blood-pressure screenings, fitness information and professional on-site advice on medications, along with free literature on a variety of health topics. Kids’ activities and face painting will take place.
