Library programs

The libraries in Pembroke and Richmond Hill are continuing their summer programs. On June 27, Jeff Rayno will perform his magic and mayhem in Pembroke at 10:30 a.m. and in Richmond Hill at 2 p.m. If you haven’t signed up for the Vacation Reading Club, there is still time to join in the fun, read and get prizes too. Both libraries will be closed July 4 in honor of Independence Day.

 

Head start

Bryan County Head Start will be taking application at the Richmond Hill Library June 28 from 12-6 p.m.

 

 

Helping hands

Helping Hands of Bryan Co. will hold a week of service July 9 -13. Youth and adult volunteers will be doing small home repairs and yard work for low-income elderly and/or disabled families in Bryan County. Anyone who would like to volunteer their time and skills should call 756-5333 or 653-5344.

The group also is looking for church or civic groups (or restaurants) willing to provide food for the volunteers at the worksites. Heidi Thomson is coordinating the effort. She can be reached at 604-1515 for further information.

 

American Legion

The American Legion Post 164 and Ladies Auxiliary meet on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The post is located on U.S. Highway 280 West of Pembroke. All veterans are welcome.

 

BCHS reunion

The Bryan County High School classes of 1961, 1962 and 1963 are planning a class reunion for this August. Contact addresses are needed.

GARD

G.A.R.D. (Georgia Animal Rescue Defence) is holding a dog and cat food drive. Both dry and canned foods are needed. G.A.R.D. houses animals from the area after rescuing them, socializes them and then adopts them out.

Pet food can be dropped off at the following locations: Richmond Hill Animal Hospital, the Pembroke Library, Cross Screen Printing Company in Hinesville and Shaggy Chic in Pooler. Donations of flea medications and other supplies also are needed. Call 653-2480 or 727-2647 for more information.

Polio survivors

The Coastal Empire Polio Survivors Association will meet Saturday, June 23 at 10:30 a.m. in Savannah at the Candler Heart and Lung Building, second floor, Room 2 at 5353 Reynolds St. Polio survivors and guests are invited. Historical Society

The Richmond Hill Historical Society will hold its’ annual Pot-Luck Supper at the Wetlands Center in Gregory Park in Richmond Hill on July 5 at 7 p.m. The Historical Society will provide the Bar-B-Q and drinks. You do not have to be a member to come; just bring an interest in history, a desire to spend some time with both new and old friends, and a covered dish.

Lunch and learn

Clyde Usher will be hosting a Lunch and Learn session on Thursday, June 28 at noon in the Richmond Hill Bryan County Chamber of Commerce office. The topic is "Leadership in Times of Change."

There are still seats available if you would like to attend. Please call the Chamber office to RSVP. The cost is $10 for members, and $15 for non-members. Price includes lunch and beverage.

 

Fundraiser

Low Country boil dinners will be sold on July 1 to support Barbara Cline, who is awaiting a kidney transplant. The pickup point will be at First Baptist Church in Richmond Hill between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. You can buy dinner tickets for $10 each at the following locations:

Mammograms

St. Joseph’s/Candler will be performing mammograms to screen for breast cancer in its mobile screening unit on July 11 and 18 at St. Joseph’s/Candler Medical Group – Pembroke and on July 12 at the Bryan County Health Department in Richmond Hill. SJ/C accepts most insurance plans including Blue Cross HMO. Financial assistance is available to women who qualify. Appointments are necessary and may be made by calling 819-6800.

 

Scouts

The members of Boy Scout Troop 357 in Pembroke will be erecting the flags and crosses that honor of our fallen veterans to celebrate July Fourth, Independence Day. We are asking for community volunteers to come out and assist us in making this an event that everyone in the community can be proud of. The event will take place Saturday, June 30 at 9 am. It is located at the caboose beh.ind the Welcome Center in McEachin Square.
