Blood drive

Richmond Hill High School will hold a community blood drive on Nov. 19 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the school gym. This blood drive is open to everyone. Photo IDs are required. In addition, all who give blood between now and Dec. 31 can enter to win a $1,000 gift card from the American Red Cross. For more information go to www.redcrossblood.org.

 

Budget

A copy of the City of Pembroke FY 2009 proposed budget will be available for public inspection on Nov. 14 at City Hall. The City of Pembroke will conduct a public hearing on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 160 North Main Street to receive questions and comments on the proposed budget.

The FY 2009 budget will be presented for adoption at the Dec. 8 regular City Council meeting.

 

Trash pickup

Because of the Veterans Day holiday, all dry trash pickup scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 11, will be picked up Wednesday, Nov. 12.

 

DDS

All Department of Driver Services (DDS) customer service centers and administrative offices will be closed in observance of Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11 and will reopen on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The day following a holiday is typically a very busy day, so please plan ahead. DDS reminds customers that many transactions may be initiated online such as replacing a lost license or a change of address. Please visit www.dds.ga.gov for more information.

Veterans Day

The Mayor and Council of the City of Richmond Hill cordially invite you to the 2008 Veterans Day Observance Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. in J.F. Gregory Park near the Veterans Monument. Colonel Thomas S. Vandal, 3rd Ifantry Division deputy commanding general will be the guest speaker.

 

Teen board

New members are wanted for the Richmond Hill Library Teen Board, a group of pre-teen and teen volunteers in grades 6-12. They hold meetings twice monthly to write book reviews, plan special activities and youth programs and much more. They also help the librarians in the Richmond Hill Public Library with the Juvenile and Young Adult section, be it with advice on which new books to order, or keeping the Youth area organized and inviting to their peers. Ballroom dancing

The merchants at Station XChange, Life Moves Dance Studio and Richmond Hill Dance Theater will host a free ballroom dancing class with Susan Hayes on Nov. 9 from 4-7 p.m. No experience is necessary.

 

Upward sports

Magnolia Manor

Lisa Cree will be the next speaker for Magnolia Manor on the Coast’s Renaissance Lecture Series.  The event, titled "The Art of Sending a Card" is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 13 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Call 756-4300 for more information.

 

Outdoor sale

The Richmond Hill Historical Society is holding an outdoor sale on Nov. 8 from 8a.m.-2 p.m. on the grounds of the Richmond Hill Museum. On sale will be books, baked goods, maps, art work, furntiture, household items, etc. If you have any items you would like to donate there will be someone at the Museum on Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Donations will be accepted until Nov. 6 and anything not sold will be donated to Goodwill. Pembroke GC

YMCA teens

Middle School and High School Students are welcome to join the YMCA Teen Achievers program. The program is designed to help teens set and pursue a higher education and career goals. The Richmond Hill/Pembroke YMCA goals and objectives are to build character and develop positive self esteem.

Animal shelter

The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary has placed collection boxes at City Hall and Harvey’s in Pembroke for donations to the North Bryan animal shelter. Needed items include blankets, sheets and other bedding items, as well as cat food, dog food and treats for the animals.

 

Veterans Day

The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor the 2nd annual Veterans Day Program at 11 a.m. on Sat., Nov. 8 at the Caboose on Hwy. 280 in Pembroke. Active members of each military branch will present new flags for US Navy, Marine Corp., Air Force and Army. Refreshments will be served after the program.

 

Master Gardner

Are you interested in learning about the how’s, why’s and how come’s of gardening? If so, you may want to take the Master Gardener course. This program is an in-depth study of gardening that will include: Composting, Butterfly Gardening, Water Gardening, Plant Propagation, Pest Control, Irrigation, Xeriscaping and much more.

2009 classes will start on Tuesday, Feb. 3 and run through Thursday, May 5. The class sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-noon at the Bamboo Farm and Coastal Gardens (No. 2 Canebrake Road) on Hwy. 17.

Cost of the program is $175, which includes your first year’s dues to the State Master Gardener’s Association and the Coastal Area Master Gardeners Association, a Georgia Master Gardener Handbook, plus several other manuals to make your gardening experience more enjoyable and easier. Each class participant must agree to donate 50 hours of volunteer service following completion of the course. Heating help

The Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority, Inc., will assist eligible households with heating bills. Georgia’s Heating Assistance program will start Monday, Nov. 3, for homebound, disabled and elderly households 65 years or older. Also households with individuals who have life-threatening medical conditions and have been disconnected or are in danger of being disconnected may apply. All other eligible families may apply starting Dec. 1. Call 1-866-423-8081.

 

Come meet the dog of your dreams at the combined Savannah and Beaufort Kennel Clubs dog shows Thanksgiving weekend. There will be four days of confirmation, obedience and rally trials Nov. 30 – Dec.1 at L. Scott Stell Community Park west of Savannah on Bush Road, off GA 204. Events run from 8:30 am to 4 pm and are free to spectators; there is a parking fee. Plenty of dog-related merchandise is available from vendors for holiday gifts.

If you ever wanted to see a particular breed or type dog, a dog show is a great opportunity to look at the finest representatives of the dog world and to talk to breeders. Family pets are not allowed on the show grounds.
