The Richmond Hill High School JROTC Booster Club will have a car wash on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Courthouse Annex next to Hardees. Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Wildcat spirit items will be on sale. In addition, Booster Club President Jennifer Clark will be selling raffle tickets for a 4-wheeler at $15 each. The tickets regularly cost $25 each. The drawing will be Sept. 30 and the winner will be notified by phone. Money collected will be refunded if the sale of tickets doesn't pay for the 4-wheeler. The fundraiser is to help pay for a trailer for the JROTC.

The Bryan County High School Band will be having a car wash fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Pembroke Pharmacy on E. Bacon Street.
Because of the hot weather and the opening of schools in the area, the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 164, Pembroke, has decided to cancel the picnic for wives and children of deployed soldiers that was to be held on Saturday, Aug. 25.
A later date will be announced.
The Bryan County Board of Commissioners announced Aug. 9 a plan to raise property taxes for the upcoming fiscal year.
Three public hearings will be held in order to allow public input on the increase:
- Aug. 20, at 4 p.m. at the Bryan County Courthouse, Commissioners Meeting Room;
- Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Richmond Hill Courthouse Annex; and
- Aug. 27, at 9:30 a.m. at the Bryan County Courthouse.

Library book sale
Pembroke Library’s annual book sale is just around the corner.
The kids are back in school and it’s time to clean out the closets, etc. Please think about donating all your old, but in good condition, books to the Pembroke Library for their annual book sale.

A grief support meeting for those who have lost a child, grandchild, or sibling is now forming in Pembroke.

Richmond Hill American Legion Post 27 now meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Chamber of Commerce across from Blocker's Barber Shop. The executive board meets at 6 p.m. and the regular meeting gets under way at 7 p.m.
Each year hundreds of thousands of nonprofit organizations apply to community foundations, private and corporate foundations and the United Way for funding. In 2006, United Way raised over $7.8 million to support more than 90 community-oriented programs and 37 nonprofit health and human service organizations within the Coastal Empire.
Nonprofits seeking success in applying to United Way and to other funding programs need to plan how to track and demonstrate measurable program results.
To help local nonprofits in their efforts, the Georgia Center for Nonprofits (GCN) is offering Developing Outcome-Based Performance Measures For Grant-Funded Programs on Aug. 16 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the United Way Building, 428 Bull St., Savannah. Applications to the United Way of the Coastal Empire are due Aug. 31.
Trainer Sharon DuBose, with the Central Savannah River’s Economic Opportunity Authority, is certified by the Georgia Results Oriented Management Association, and has offered this training to hundreds of nonprofits.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Coastal Georgia Affiliate announces the availability of grant funds for fiscal year 2008.
Applications for breast cancer and breast cancer health programs from non-profit organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions in Chatham, Effingham, Bryan, Liberty, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh counties are eligible for funding. This is the first year the Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate is funding local community programs.
The grant cycle runs from July 31, through Aug. 31. Eligible applications must be postmarked by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. Announcement of funding will be made by Oct. 1.

Between now and Sept. 11, the community can donate school supplies toward St. Joseph’s/Candler’s Angels of Mercy’s annual Danny’s Brown Box and Gail Jones’ Backpack for Every Child school supply drive.
The drive provides art and school supplies to at-risk students in local childcare facilities and classrooms in Savannah. St. Joseph’s/Candler co-workers set up brown boxes in work areas for collections. All donations are welcome, including composition books, paper, crayons, pencils, pens, rulers, and back packs. Backpacks must be clear or mesh to meet school policies.

ADAThe American Diabetes Association has partnered with the Savannah Waterfront Association to host an Arts and Crafts Festival on historic River Street on Saturday, Aug. 25 to benefit the annual Walk on the Wild Side Step Out to Fight Diabetes campaign.
Waterfront Association Director Rick Lott said, "Diabetes Day on the River may look like a typical First Saturday Festival on the River but it may be even more fun. There will be the usual artists and craftsmen on the waterfront plaza, but there will also be health screenings and helpful information about diabetes."
The Festival will run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. along the river and will feature arts and crafts, food and beverage, entertainment and informational booths as well.

The Georgia Latino Forum invites Latino and Latino-serving organizations from the Savannah and Coastal Georgia area to attend an information session on Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 6:30–7:30 p.m. in the Armstrong Center, 13040 Abercorn Street (southeast corner of Abercorn and Apache Avenue).
The informal meeting will serve as an opportunity to get better acquainted with and discuss current issues relevant to Latinos and Latino-serving organizations in the region.

Proceeds from renewals of the Breast Cancer License Tag, totaling $500,000, are available for non-profit organizations and public health agencies to expand breast cancer education, screening, access, and outreach to people in the state of Georgia who are medically indigent. Applications are available and must be submitted by Sept. 14 for funding effective October 2008.
