The Richmond Hill Middle School girls soccer team completed its undefeated season Tuesday night, grabbing the Coastal Empire Region Champion title.
RHMS beat South Effingham Middle School 4-0. Both teams fought hard in the first half with neither team scoring.
In the second half, Ellie Filimonczuck scored early. Arianna Page, Lexie Merry and Ellie Filimonczuck followed up with the last three goals.
Defense by Elizabeth Elison, Madeline Ward, Maggie Batson and Rachel Rey helped keep a shutout, according to head coach Jillian Yontz.
“These ladies are some of the most talented, hardworking, motivated and tenacious athletes I have coached,” Yontz said of the whole team. “They showed up every practice focused and ready for whatever we threw at them, not to mention a daily fight against the sand gnats.”
She said they worked to improve on their own and kept positive attitudes.
“These ladies are athletes that act and play beyond their years,” the coach said. “They were truly a pleasure to coach. coach Tremble and I could not be more proud of them. They deserve all the praise and recognition for this win because they earned every single second of it. I guarantee we will see big things from them in the future.”
