The recreation football season kicked off this weekend with a "Rama" event. Richmond Hill played host to the event which featured South Georgia Youth Football League, or SGYFL-sanctioned teams from all over the region in practice games.

The SGYFL features 16 teams from Richmond Hill, Hendrix Park, Savannah, Talahi Island and Effingham County.

All the teams competed multiple times during Saturday’s Rama event with constant play throughout the day on all three fields at the Richmond Rill rec park on Harris Trail Road. RHRA director Donna Reid said about 900 people were at the park this day with parking overflowing from Live Oak to the fire station.

Included in the event was the home RHRA Wildcat teams in the 12 and under, 10 and under, and 8 and under divisions, the Richmond Hill 12 and under Bengals and the Hendrix Park Redskin teams in the 12 and under and 10 and under divisions.

Each game consisted of 10 offensive and 10 defensive plays from each team. No score was kept. Rather, this was just a chance to get all the league players weighed, organized and practiced. The regular season kicks off this coming weekend.

Besides the SGYFL-sanctioned teams, in-house teams are next in line to begin play for both RHRA and Hendrix Park. About 500 kids in Bryan County have signed up for rec football and cheerleading.
