RH baseball, boys soccer advance

The Richmond Hill baseball and boys’ soccer teams both picked up wins at home Friday night to advance to the Sweet 16 in their respective state tournaments.

The baseball team defeated Stephenson 15-5 and 14-2 in the best-of-three series and advances to play Winder-Barrow, the No. 1 seed in Region 8-AAAAAA. The Bulldoggs are ranked first in the state in 6A and were undefeated in region play. The Wildcats are now 21-10 overall and went 9-3 in Region 2-AAAAAA.

Chris Sewell led the Richmond Hill effort in the first game, hitting for the cycle with two home runs and driving in nine runs. He added a two-run double in the second game, giving him 11 RBIs on the night, which is one more than he totaled all season.

Kip Gibson drove in three runs in the first game on three singles. Mike Menhart picked up the win on the mound for Richmond Hill in the first game while Jackson Finley got the win in the nightcap.

The Wildcats play a double-header at Winder-Barrow Thursday with the “if necessary” game there Friday.

The boys’ soccer team was tied with Mt. Zion 2-2 at the end of regulation and after two scoreless overtimes, but beat the Eagles 3-1 on penalty kicks to pick up the victory. The Wildcats host Apalachee Wednesday. The game time is to be determined.
