Editor’s Corner: Palate cleansers
Andrea Gutierrez new

Readers: remember when last week I wrote about not having ideas for ‘Editor’s Corner’?

Well, no need to worry!

I thought up dozens and dozens of column ideas while at my regularly scheduled teeth cleaning last Thursday afternoon, getting my gums flossed and my plaque buildup removed.

Turns out that the dull comfort of a dentist’s chair is enough to inspire creativity in me. I bet if I had enough time at the dentist, I could write up the plot for an entire Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (so long as I’m not getting a root canal, though).

I’ll never understand people who are scared of going to the dentist; it’s one of the few places in the world where you are encouraged to sit back and relax, alongside commercial airlines, Ferris wheels and Brazilian steakhouses. The worst thing that might happen to you at the dentist’s office is probably some hygienist chiding you for not flossing enough, or some preschooler giving you the side-eye for taking a Pixar sticker and toothbrush at your big age of 22 (this may or may not have happened to me).

Anyways, let’s move on to one of my column topics: food reviews! Nowadays, food reviews have become a very popular genre of YouTube video that commands interest from many viewers, including myself! My favorite ones are usually travel vloggers visiting the U.S. for the first time, going to fast food places like Five Guys or In-N-Out or shopping at Walmart to try over 37 different flavors of Oreo cookies, most likely getting cavities at the checkout line as well. (I sound like my dentist already!)

So for this week, I have decided to give my personal ranking of Lays' Potato Chip flavors, as seen on the official Lay’s website. Like most people, I like chips. Unlike most people, however, I consider myself to be a connoisseur of chips, to the point where I will not entertain differing snack opinions at family functions (I’m sorry; I don’t like the Tostitos Scoop tortilla chips at all-they’re a gimmick and don’t really hold up the salsa well enough in my experience).

Here goes nothing!

(Editor’s Note: I am not sponsored by Lay’s, although that would be kinda cool. My opinions are 110% mine).

Lays’ Classic Potato Chips: Can’t go wrong with the classics, although some folks may find these chips too plain. (3 stars/5)

Lay’s BBQ Flavored Potato Chips: One of my favorite flavors! Just enough seasoning and pizzazz to pair with a late-night marathon of “Community” reruns. (5 stars/5)

Lay’s Sour Cream & Onion Flavored Potato Chips: My mom’s favorite chip flavor. A solid option for those wanting a mild snack. (4 stars/5)

Lay’s Cheddar & Sour Cream Flavored Potato Chips: Like the Sour Cream & Onion, but with cheese instead of onion, obviously. (4 stars/5)

Lay’s Flamin’ Hot Flavored Potato Chips: Here is Lay’s flagship spicy chip flavor. I do like these, but I don’t eat them regularly–my tolerance for hot chips is high, but not that high. (4 stars/5) Lay’s Sweet & Spicy Honey Potato Chips: These chips are more my speed, but unfortunately I hardly see this particular flavor in the stores I shop at. (5 stars/5)

Lay’s Salt and Vinegar Flavored Potato Chips: These chips divide opinion like no other; you either love them or hate them. I absolutely hate them, but to each their own. (0 stars/5)

Lay’s Sweet Southern Heat BBQ Flavored Potato Chips: I thought I would like these more than I actually do, these taste very “heavy” to me. I wouldn’t eat more than one chip or two. (2 stars/5)

Lay’s Honey BBQ Flavored Potato Chips: I haven’t tried every Lay’s flavor that exists, but I am certain that these are my absolute favorite so far. (5 stars/5)

Lay’s Chile Limon Flavored Potato Chips: I cannot stand these–to me, these actually taste spicier than the Flamin’ Hot Flavored Lay’s Chips. These are also my dad’s favorite chip flavor. (1 star/5)

Lay’s Limon Flavored Potato Chips: I like these–tangy but not unbearably so. (4 stars/5)

Lay’s Dill Pickle Flavored Potato Chips: Haven’t tried these yet, but I don’t really like pickles, unless they are in a Cuban sandwich. (N/A)

Lay’s Flamin’ Hot Dill Pickle Flavored Potato Chips: Spicy pickles? These sound ridiculous, and I must try them soon. (N/A)
