Kevin Matthews' stint in the Arizona League didn't last long.
The Texas Rangers promoted Matthews to short-season Spokane on Monday, and he made his first start Tuesday against Yakima.
Matthews, 18, struck out six batters in three innings while giving up a run on three hits and two walks, according to scout.com. Spokane won the game 3-2.
Matthews, a 2011 graduate of Richmond Hill High School, was selected in the first round by the Texas Rangers in June.
Prior to his promotion to Spokane, he had seven appearances with the Surprise Rangers of the Arizona League and compiled a 1.50 ERA while striking out 12 in 12 innings pitched. Matthews gave up 10 hits and five walks.
