Richmond Hill squads lose, Lady Redskins win

Effingham County knocked off No. 1 seed Richmond Hill 59-47 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Region 2-AAAAAA boys’ basketball tournament at RHHS.

The Wildcats (19-6) play Glynn Academy at 5 p.m. Friday for the region’s No. 3 seed in the state tournament.

The Red Terrors (15-11) fell 65-61 on Wednesday to rival Brunswick.

The Pirates (18-8) will play Effingham County (18-9) for the Region 2-AAAAAA title at 8 p.m. Friday night at RHHS.

The Rebels jumped out to a 15-8 first quarter lead against Richmond Hill, then used a strong final quarter to put the game away.

Steven Gandy led the host Wildcats with 15 points while Sam James chipped in with 11 points and Montest Bumpers added 10.

The Richmond Hill girls fell 44-30 to Brunswick in the girls’ tournament at RHHS. The Lady Wildcats trailed by only four points early in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Pirates closed out the game on a 15-5 run.

Jazlyn Martin had six points to lead the Lady Wildcats (11-15) who also got five points each from Javionna McDonald and Hannah Yontz.

Richmond Hill will play Bradwell Institute at 3:30 p.m. Friday for the No. 3 seed from 2-AAAAAA in the girls’ state basketball tournament. 

Bryan County girls

Bryan County High School downed Metter 55-42 on Wednesday to advance in the girls’ Region 2-AA basketball tournament at Toombs County High School.
