While the Bryan County high school baseball team enjoys its best season in years, the middle school team is chasing a regional championship of its own.
The team finished the regular season undefeated at 6-0 and is the No. 1 seed for the regional tournament. It hosts a first round game Tuesday but does not yet know the opponent. Three wins will give them the title, with the championship game scheduled for April 23.
The Redskins have beaten Claxton, Glennville and Reidsville twice each, scoring 58 runs while giving up just 23. Team members are: Connor Story, Hunter Brown, Jerimiah Bowman, Gage Hughes, Austin Edwards, David Freidberg, Coleson Story, Dazon Anderson, Joey White, Brent Leggett, Chase Taylor, Tyler Stewart, Thad Stewart, Tucker Dyson and Jacob Hughes. The coaches are Steve Jarrell and Joe Peny.
“Our pitching has been the biggest surprise,” Jarrell said. “But it’s been a complete team effort.”
Bryan County High School Coach Jason Roundtree sees the benefit of the middle school’s success.
“Our entire program is strong,” he said. “I stress the word program because most schools will eventually have a good team but our entire baseball program all the way down to the middle school team is doing well.”
