The Bryan County girls’ soccer team lost in the first round of the AA state tournament 10-0 at East Laurens Thursday night, but Coach Zyon Smiley said the team has plenty to be proud of.

The Redskins won six games this year, including five by shutout, totaling more wins than in the history of the program combined. They finish the season at 6-7.

Although Bryan County qualified for the state tournament last year, Region 2-AA was smaller in 2015 and all four teams advanced. This year only the top four out of seven teams in the region qualified.

“We had to work hard to earn a playoff berth,” Smiley said.

Bryan County only loses three seniors, so Smiley said he is looking forward to next year given the amount of experience returning. Included in that group is sophomore Sarah Coursey, the team’s leading scorer with 19 goals, and sophomore goalie Jailyn Morgan, who Smiley said had not played soccer before this season.

“Our girls have a lot to be proud of, it was a breakout season,” he said. “We hope to build on this year’s success for next season.”
