Bryan County had two wrestlers qualify for this week’s GHSA state traditional tournament as Colton Gunter at 132 pounds and Jayden Lee at 113 earned a trip to Macon for the event which crowns individual champions.
With the top six finishers in last Saturday’s sectional tournament advancing Lee was fifth in his weight class and Gunter grabbed sixth to claim a spot in the elite field . This marked the second straight year the Redskins’ three-year-old program qualified wrestlers for the state finals.
Senior Tarrell Singleton, who saw his promising season ended by a knee injury last month in the area duals tournament, qualified last year. Both Gunter and Lee will be wrestling Thursday morning in the event which runs through Saturday.
“I’m very proud of these guys,” Coach Zach Ledbetter said. “We walked into a sectional that had seven of the Elite 8 teams from the team duals and we were able to get five wrestlers, mostly underclassmen, into the final 16 in the state.
“We had two others who were one match away from the final 16 as well. I see us continuing to grow and develop and know that we are beginning to perform at the same level as many of the of the top teams in the state.”
William Patrick finished seventh at 120 pounds which earned him alternate status for the state tournament. Should someone be unable to wrestle Patrick will be in the field. Jett Lewis (285) finished eighth as did Riley Shuman (106).
