Re: ‘September’ by Dick Yarbrough (Sept. 5)
Dear Mr. Yarbrough:
I want to compliment you on the recent piece you wrote entitled “September.” It brought back many memories for me and stirred emotions. I’ve read your column for as many years it has been published in the Bryan County News here in Richmond Hill. Except for those weeks when you’ve gone to the liberal side of conservatism I’ve agreed with most of your opinion pieces. On the other hand, I appreciate your provision of balance in your columns.
I too remember the September and fall days of attending the University of Georgia football games dressed in my one-and-only best Sunday suit. Corsages were especially important on homecoming weekends for the lady who walked on my arm on those days. I’ll be attending the game this weekend with my adult son wearing shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. I started as a freshman right out of high school in 1967 and finished 5 years later graduating from the College of Pharmacy. Although I’ve been in Athens many times since then, the last time I attended a football game was with this same son when he was still a baby in my wife’s womb - 45 years ago. I suspect that a lot has changed since my last September game in Athens.
Your September theme in this week’s column mentions the “September Song” notably sung by Frank Sinatra. It speaks of time in the autumn of one’s life. You and I both have reached that mile-stone. Most memories are ones we choose to remember, not others that we choose to forget as the song “Memories” by Barbara Striesand reminds us. Thank you for helping me to remember the “Good Times.”
