Don’t focus on the devil’s bait
pastor corner

Over spring break my wife and I took the grandkids on a trip to Florida. Such a trip has become a yearly tradition.

A few of the kids like to go fishing with their papa, who is trying to figure out what it is going to take to get the fish to bite. One of the keys is to find the right bait to use.

It is possible to fish all day using the wrong bait and end up catching nothing. But by using the right bait, you can catch a lot of fish in a short time period.

In a negative sense, not the fisherman but the devil is trying to figure out what bait he can use in order to get us to yield to temptation and to make wrong decisions.

We all have our weaknesses and the devil is going to throw us bait in those areas. He knows those areas where it would be fruitless in trying to tempt us in so he doesn’t choose that bait.

The truth of the matter is that if you are a follower of Jesus, then you will be tempted. Satan will be throwing you bait that will get your attention.

The good news is that when this happens, we have promises in God’s word found in 1 Corinthians 10:13, which reads like this: “And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

So, first our God is faithful to not allow bait to be thrown at us which we don’t have the strength to turn away from, or our God will provide a way over it, under it, through it, or around it, so that we can escape from it.

We get into trouble when we take our eyes off of Jesus and start to focus on the bait.
