From Effingham Herald staff reports

Two Faulkville area teens were killed in a single-car accident on Interstate 16 Sunday night in Bryan County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Allen Scott Whiteaker, 19, and Madison Floyd, 18, were killed when Floyd’s 2001 black Honda Civic left the road and struck a tree, then spun and hit another tree. Whiteaker was the driver of the vehicle, according to GSP Trooper Chad Gray.

The accident took place at 8:40 p.m. near mile marker 146. Floyd was apparently on her way back to Georgia Southern University, where she was a student.

Witnesses told GSP investigators that the car made a lane change from the left lane to the right and continued in the right lane but then left the road. The car went down an embankment, struck a tree with the right front tire, then spun clockwise and slid into another tree on the driver’s side.

Neither Whiteaker nor Floyd was wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation but speed is not thought to be a factor. Blood samples from Whiteaker were taken and have been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for examination, but alcohol also is not thought to be a  mitigating factor in the accident.
