Several pounds of marijuana seized

The Bryan County Sheriff’s Department traffic unit seized 10 and a half pounds of marijuana from a suspected drug trafficker off I-95 in Richmond Hill last week, according to a BCSD incident report.

On April 29, unit member Cpl. Mark Crowe pulled over North Carolina resident Alfonso Cantu after noticing that his tag was obstructed. Crowe reportedly interviewed Cantu, who said he dropped his niece off in Georgia, although he said he did not know what part or what exit, and was headed back to North Carolina.

Lt. David Blige and Deputy Shane Tatum arrived shortly to the scene, and Cantu gave consent to search the vehicle, according to the report. When they opened the trunk, Crowe reports that they got a whiff of raw marijuana and saw newly installed speaker boxes. Upon removing three speakers, three bundles of marijuana were reportedly found, wrapped in black plastic and smeared with red grease.

Cantu was arrested, taken to Bryan County Jail and charged with trafficking marijuana.
