A Richmond Hill woman was arrested Wednesday in Savannah after she attempted to cash more than $9,000 in U.S. Treasury checks she had already deposited, according the Savannah-Chatham police.

29-year-old Dawn Marie Riley of Laurel Hill Circle was charged with two counts of deposit account fraud and two counts of theft by deception.

Detective William Stegin of Savannah-Chatham’s Financial Crimes division said Riley first deposited the three checks earlier this year into her bank account using a feature that allows customers to scan checks for deposit at home.

Then about six months later in June, Riley allegedly went to The Heritage Bank at 6000 Ogeechee Road and tried to cash the same three checks.

However, bank employees determined the checks could not be honored, and Riley turned herself in after the situation was reported to metro police.
