A Richmond Hill Police Department officer was involved in a car chase on Highway 17 early Tuesday that ended when the driver crashed in Chatham County, RHPD Chief Billy Reynolds said.

No arrests have been made and few details were available Tuesday afternoon other than the driver escaped on foot, “but has been identified,” and warrants will be taken out for his arrest, Reynolds said.

The incident began around 2 a.m., according to reports, when an RHPD officer spotted a car failing to stay in its lane as it headed north on Highway 17. The officer suspected DUI. Then, after turning on his emergency lights, saw a woman who appeared to be waving for help and trying to leave the car.

Police reportedly chased the car on into Chatham County, and it crashed several times before the driver stopped and escaped into the woods.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police assisted.

The female passenger was questioned and released “with no charges at this time,” Reynolds said.
